Review saved vocabulary with flashcards and original sentences

Saving a word creates a possible future task. It does not complete the learning process. A useful review checks whether you remember the meaning, recognise the phrase in its sentence and can use it appropriately.

Keep your saved vocabulary manageable

Choose expressions that helped you understand a story or that you expect to use. If you save every unknown word, review may become a long queue with no clear purpose. Relevance can guide selection better than novelty alone.

Before adding a card, inspect the original sentence. Keep the article, preposition or word combination that makes the expression usable. A translation may be part of the card, but should not be its only information.

Recall before revealing

Look at the prompt and try to recover the meaning or phrase before checking. If your answer is vague, compare it with the context. Distinguish a completely forgotten word from an expression you recognise but cannot yet use.

He kept his promise and returned the book on Monday.
Recover “keep a promise” as a combination. Then write a sentence about a promise you made. “Keep” has several meanings, so the original sentence matters.

Add a second context

When the card becomes familiar, create a new sentence. This checks more than recognition of the original example. For German, preserve the relevant case and preposition; for English, check the phrase’s usual partners.

If an expression stays difficult, return to the story or listen to its sentence again. Sometimes a missing context is the problem, not a need for more rapid repetitions.

Connect Lexiego review to reading

Lexiego includes saved vocabulary and flashcard review with context. Use review to decide what to look for during your next story, then notice the expression when it appears elsewhere.

  1. Select a small set of relevant saved expressions.
  2. Recall before checking the answer.
  3. Reread the original sentence and explain the use.
  4. Create a new example and revisit it later.
